Re "Does a pot bust trump a 4.0 GPA?" Dec. 5

The Times exposes how universities try to limit educational opportunities. Students across the country are working to remove the drug-related question from federal financial aid forms because penalizing those who want access to higher education just isn't smart. College is not the battleground for the war on drugs. By weeding out students who have used marijuana or engaged in underage drinking, colleges stifle the university's traditional role of valuing diverse life experiences. Young people make mistakes that often enrich their decision-making skills in the future. Let's hope colleges and universities also learn from their mistakes and keep higher education accessible.
